Johannesburg, 14 March 2016 – Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Johannesburg , has an extensive Social Assistance Programme overseen by its Social Assistance Co-ordinator, Samson “Sam” Khoza. Sam Khoza was our latest guest on the JRS, half an hour radio slot, on South Africa’s premiere Catholic radio station, Radio Veritas and joined us in studio at 16:30 P.M. on Monday, 7thMarch 2016.

Samson spoke about the wide ranging assistance the Social Assistance Programme provides, from the immediate emergency assistance provided through to more long term and sustained assistance it provides in the form of education and home-based healthcare.

The urban refugees JRS South Africa assists have wide ranging needs. From needing immediate, short-term interventions with food, shelter and clothing, to long term assistance with gaining access to formal education and healthcare. Refugees and asylum seekers have similar rights to South African citizens, however they also have similar responsibilities of housing, schooling and obtaining employment.

Samson Khoza gave great insight into the work being done in this area as well as co-ordinated efforts with refugees and asylum seekers. The conversation with him is podcast below.
