Fundraising and Development Officer, Individual Giving

ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international non-governmental organisation (INGO) with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people. The organisation was founded in 1980 and currently has a presence in 51 countries. JRS undertakes services at local, national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office (IO) in Rome. The style of JRS service is human and spiritual, working in situations of greatest need, seeking the long-term well-being of refugees and displaced people, while not neglecting their immediate or urgent needs.

The main services provided are in the field of education, emergency assistance, psychosocial support and livelihood activities. Currently, more than 733,000 individuals are direct beneficiaries of JRS projects.


OPERATIONAL CONTEXT/ROLE

The JRS International Office in Rome is the head office of the Jesuit Refugee Service. It leads the organisational strategy and provides support and guidance in the areas of programmes, finance, advocacy, communications, fundraising and human resources to 10 regional offices worldwide.

To expand its fundraising efforts, JRS has created a new position of Fundraising and Development Officer, Individual Giving. We are looking for a self-starter with expertise especially in individual donor and digital fundraising to structure and grow our work in this area.

Reporting to the International Director of Philanthropy and Development, the Fundraising and Development Officer will be part of the Philanthropy and Development Department (a team of six people) leading the organisation’s global efforts in the acquisition of financial resources through fundraising from public and private sources.

Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the Director of Philanthropy and Development, develop and drive the individual and mid-level donors fundraising strategy.
  • Fundraise from current and new individual donors and Jesuit-related networks in Europe and beyond through all fundraising channels.
  • Develop and manage the giving section for the new website under construction.
  • Copy write and supervise external copy writers for fundraising publications and materials, such as online and printed campaigns and thank you letters.
  • Supervise the management of the Donor Database.
  • Coordinate and develop fundraising publications (digital and hard copies), including the Annual Report and Servir magazine.
  • Supervise the fundraising assistant and a fundraising intern.
  • Collaborate with the Advocacy and Communication Department, in particular with the Communications Officer, the Communications Assistant and the Digital Communications Associate, to make sure content produced is engaging for supporters and integrates relevant advocacy messages, and that communications tools are optimally used.
  • Liaise with the JRS-USA office in Washington and other JRS-related offices to develop and exchange common fundraising campaigns.
  • Assist the Department Director in promoting and implementing the fundraising strategy across all JRS regions.
  • Work with the Philanthropy and Development team to research and identify new tools and platforms that increase the team’s capacity to fulfil tasks.


Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • University degree in communications, marketing, international relations, fundraising, or a related field. 
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a fundraising or marketing capacity.
  • Fundraising experience in the humanitarian sector would be an asset
  • Demonstrated track record in the above mentioned main duties and responsibilities.

Required Skills and Competences

  • Outstanding writing skills for fundraising
  • Mother tongue level written and verbal English is indispensable; a professional working knowledge of French, Italian, German and/or Spanish is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to persuasively articulate JRS’s messages and impact to external audiences.
  • Excellent prospect research skills and knowledge of funding sources is desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multi-cultural/international and high energy professional environment.
  • Strong analytical, strategic-thinking and planning skills.
  • Strong ability to adapt and be flexible with changing requirements.
  • Ability to work under pressure and beyond standard hours when needed to meet submission deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, take initiative, and make recommendations in solving problems.
  • Understanding of and commitment to humanitarian relief work and international development.
  • Ability to work with specialized fundraising systems and donor management. 
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Familiarity with the Jesuit network is an asset.

Travel

The job requires occasional travel to JRS locations and participation in specific events around the world.  



Conditions

Contract is for one year, to be converted into a permanent contract upon positive evaluation. The JRS remuneration policy is aligned with the JRS ethos to offer effective and professional services and at the same time express solidarity with the people served. The salary is calculated with the use of a post-adjustment multiplier and takes into account years of relevant experience and degree of responsibility of the role.
