Michael S Gallagher SJ is Jesuit Refugee Service Representative to the Offices of the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva.
He has held that post since 2008. Michael began working for JRS in 2001 as regional Advocacy Officer for Southern Africa, later he served as JRS Country Director in Zambia, followed again with a term as regional advocacy officer.
Prior to joining JRS Fr Gallagher was managing attorney of a not-for profit organization in El Paso, Texas where he represented people seeking asylum in the United States. He has also served as provincial assistant for international and social ministries, Clinical Professor of Law at Loyola University, New Orleans and Instructor in Philosophy at Spring Hill College, Mobile, Alabama.
Fr Gallagher holds degrees of Master of Studies in Forced Migration from the University of Oxford, a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University, a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Toronto, degrees in theology from Boston College and Santa Clara University and a Bachelor of Arts from Spring Hill College.
Fr Gallagher was ordained a priest in 1984 and is a member of United States Central and Southern Province. He entered the Jesuits in 1967 after graduating from High School in Fort Worth, Texas, his home town.
