Democratic Republic of Congo: fishing in troubled waters, Goma
Goma is a city of survivors. They have survived the eruption of a volcano and lived through the violence which reigns in its hinterland. A significant number of the city’s districts were rebuilt over the lava which covered the city in 2002. Due to the violence in the hinterland, the population of Goma has enormously increased in recent years. In addition to the displaced population living in the camps in Goma, the majority of displaced persons live in the urban slums of the city. The insecurity in the area dates back from the early 1990s.
