Syria: the destruction of Deir Vartan
Rome, 5 October 2012 – The sad outcome of war. Once a centre where Iraqi refugees received support. Now it is just the latest consequence of the fighting. The Jesuit Refugee Service office in Aleppo was recently destroyed in the fighting there. JRS had left the space several weeks prior to this in the face on increasing violence in the neighbourhood. The Deir Vartan centre, once home to classes, counselling and social service for refugees from Iraq and elsewhere, is now in ruins. Despite this setback, our work continues throughout Syria. In Damascus, Homs and Aleppo in the shelter-schools, a Jesuit Refugee Service educational and psychosocial support programme with recreational activities is reaching out to more than 2,500 children.
