Panama: trapped in paradise
Panama City, 19 April 2011 – In the seemingly idyllic Puerto Piña, it is difficult to imagine the hardship faced by the refugee community living there. However, hardship is the reality of day-to-day life for the indigenous Embera community. Fleeing violence in Colombia, these refugees settled in the small town on the Colombian-Panamanian border in the hope of finding protection and be recognised as refugees by the authorities. However, without refugee status, the Embera are denied access to social services, employment and freedom of movement. * JRS Panama no longer has a website
